Multiple-response questions in surveys are typically represented in data files in either binary or max-multi format.

Binary format

Binary format represents the data with a separate variable for each category of the question. See the example below. In Q, data that is in this format is set as a Pick Any question.

Max-Multi Format

Max-Multi format represents the data with a separate variable for each response. So, if all respondents gave only two responses, then only two variables are required. In Q, data in this format is set as a Pick Any - Compact question.
