How to Make Merged Categories Appear in Targets when Weighting

When categories are merged by dragging and dropping on a table, the new categories do not appear when the variable is selected to create a weight. For example, if you have age collected as a Number question, but you have turned it into a Pick One question and merged all its categories, the original pre-merged categories will appear when you select this variable as a Target question in a Weight set. This is to ensure that if people merge categories or make overlapping categories, the weights in their project are not inadvertently changed.

There are a number of ways of addressing this:

• Manually drag the categories together when doing the weighting.
• Merge the categories in the question and then use the QScript Weighting - Save Question with Merged Categories for Weighting to create a new question that has the correct set of categories.
• Use a methods for merging the categories which changes the underling values (see methods 2 through 5 on How To Band Numeric Variables).
